What is 925 silver? Why silver tarnishes and how to keep it bright

925 silver is the most widely used silver in jewellery. Learn what it is made of, why silver tarnishes over time, and a few small habits that keep your silver pieces bright.

Most of the silver jewellery you come across every day, including ThreeTrees designs, is made from 925 silver. The number describes the composition of the metal.

What is 925 silver made of?

925 silver (sterling silver) is 92.5% pure silver, with the remaining 7.5% made up of other metals, usually copper. Pure silver is too soft to hold the shape of a ring, a stone setting or a clasp; the added metal makes the piece harder and more durable while keeping the bright white colour of silver.

Why does silver tarnish?

Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, sweat, cosmetics and some foods, forming a thin dark yellow or black film on the surface. This is a natural property of silver, not a sign of poor quality. Hot, humid conditions such as a Hanoi summer make silver tarnish faster.

Keeping silver bright

  • Put your jewellery on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray.
  • Take it off when showering, swimming, exercising or using cleaning products.
  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear to remove sweat.
  • Store each piece separately in a zip bag or closed box, away from damp.
  • Wear it often: silver that is gently rubbed while worn tarnishes less than silver stored away for a long time.

When silver has tarnished

Light tarnish can be wiped off with a silver polishing cloth. For pieces with stones, pearls or plating, do not soak them in chemicals or scrub hard, as this can damage the stones and wear the plating. ThreeTrees offers polishing and maintenance at our store at 15 Nhà Thờ.
